Maria's journey began on December 23rd, 1930 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Maria was pre-deceased by her husband, Alex Gimenez and parents, Carmen Navarro Diaz, and Rosendo Salgado Diaz. She was also the last of seven siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Marissa, son in law Nicholas, grandson Jonathan and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
Maria was always a devoted mother to Marissa and doting grandmother to her only grandchild, Jonathan. Later in life she was offered an opportunity to work with children. She received her certification and took a job with the Board of Education, as a paraprofessional. She had a passion for teaching and helping children reach their full potential through programs like Reading Is Fundamental and Head Start. Maria loved her career. She had a heart for connecting with others through humor and kindness and made many lifelong friends while there.
Maria was kind and welcoming to family and friends alike, always ready to extend a helping hand, which was second nature to her. She literally would give the shirt off her back. Many would say she was the life of the party and in a lot of instances, she was. She kept those around her laughing, smiling, and wondering what she would do next. She loved making grand entrances, always arriving late, and dressed to the nines. She was a fashionista to the end! Without a doubt, there are MANY stories to tell.
There is a song from the movie The Sound of Music that always reminded me of my mother and her vivacious personality. It was titled, " How do you solve a problem like Maria?". Besides the title, these lyrics always stood out reminding me of her; (It's ALL good Mom*)
" How do you solve a problem like Maria? Unpredictable like the weather! She's as flighty as a feather. She is a darling! She's a demon! She's a lamb! She is gentle! She is wild! She's a riddle! She's a child! She's a headache. She's an angel! She's a girl! How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?”
Yes Mami, you were a special ray of light to many!
She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile and joyful spirit.
