Deborah Rebecca Campbell, 69, of NYC passed away peacefully holding hands with her children and youngest grandchild on Tuesday, August 10th, 2021, in Williamsport, Pa.

Deborah was born October 18th, 1951, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was the youngest child of Rebecca Katherine (Leaphart) Campbell. She was a happy and well-loved child, spending her time with her mother and siblings. Although she was also young at the time, she greatly enjoyed being “Aunt Deb” to her growing number of nieces and nephews. She had a lifetime love of dance and passed this on to all who knew her. She was a passionate learner and found her life calling early – as a teacher. She attended City College of New York to major in Mathematics. During undergrad, she pledged as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. While earning her degree, she worked at Head Start as a teaching assistant. Upon obtaining her bachelor’s degree, she began working at a local Catholic school, before landing a position in the New York City Public Schools at P.S. 1 in Chinatown. Shortly after, she accepted a position at P.S. 198 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and spent more than 30 years there, teaching 1st, 3rd and then primarily 5th grades. While teaching and raising her children, Deborah earned a Master of Math Education from City College.

She also was a powerful advocate for her fellow educators, serving as a United Federation of Teachers (UFT) Chapter Delegate and then Chapter Leader for many years, while remaining committed to serving children. She was also a vocal champion of education for children, through protests and political advocacy. She believed that every child could learn and deserved a great education from people who cared.

Deborah was an extraordinarily generous soul, supporting the endeavors of countless family, friends and associates and could be depended upon to show up and show out- love was an action that she displayed always.

While she hoped to work far into old age, her health challenges ushered in retirement in 2017 and a relocation to Williamsport, Pa. to be cared for by those she cared for first. During this time, she was able to share even more of her joyfulness, humor and wisdom with her beloved grandchildren and family and receive the love she so richly deserved.

She leaves to mourn her loss her loving children, daughter, Savonna Reagan (William Bowling), son, Omar Campbell, both of Williamsport, Pa, her adoring grandchildren, Cirena Reagan of New York, Shakir Reagan, Solomon Reagan and Grace Reagan of Williamsport, her sister-in love, Maryetta Campbell of New York, and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues who will remember her well.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Rebecca K. Campbell, her siblings, Blanche M. Collins, Claudia E. McMillan and Steven T. Campbell Sr, and her brothers-in-law, Rev. Dr. Harry S. Collins, Sr., and Robert E. McMillan.
