Flor Mayela Whittaker

July 20, 1958 ~ July 19, 2018 (age 59)

Flor Mayela Whittaker was born in Puerto Limon, Costa Rica on July 20, 1958 to David Barthley Johnson and Albertina Flores Ibarra (Marina). She was the eldest of 9 children.

At the age of 3, her family moved to Escazu. With it’s surrounding mountains, it became one of her favorite places. She was very fond of it’s customs and folklore… “Gallo pinto” and Tamales.  Soon she received a scholarship to attend a vocational school for cosmetology in the capital of San Jose.  After graduation, she went on to work with a renown hairstylist in Costa Rica.

Flor migrated to the United States in 1983.  Already trained in cosmetology, she pursued her license and became a certified beautician.

Flor enjoyed going to church and was a very active member.  Once when performing in a Christmas play she became very nervous. She received quick reassurances from the man playing an angel who turned out to be her angel indeed.  She fell in love with and married the “angel”, Ricardo Whittaker in November 1986.

As the mother of 2 beautiful children, Ruby and Abraham, having a loving husband and a Mother in Law with whom she had a special bond, Flor enjoyed a happy family life.  She was very giving and willing to help people. Her position as home care attendant helped to fulfil her desire to help others.  Her heart soared with joy with the birth of her 2 grandchildren Joshua and Jeanette as she had the pleasure of assisting in their   daily care.

Flor loved to travel especially to Panama and Costa Rica. She was enthralled with the Panama Canal and she took particular joy in showing her husband all the different parts of Costa Rica.  She was an excellent cook and loved to try new foods. Flor was full of energy and loved life.

Flor was the heart of her family who kept everyone together. She cherished family bonding and was always there in time of need.  On July 19th, 2018, after a long illness, God saw it fit to call her home.

Flor is survived by her husband, Ricardo, daughter and son, Ruby and Abraham, Mother, Marina, grandchildren, Joshua and Jeanette, son and daughter in law Cruz and Kristy, mother in law Delfina, 4 brothers, Roger, Ontario, William and Daniel, 5 sisters, Elizabeth, Lillian, Sonia, Grace and Nohemy, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She will be sorely missed by all.

Lovingly Submitted by The Family
