June 16, 1943 – November 29, 2017

Juan Neris passed away at the age of 74 on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his wife, Maria, his two daughters and sister Asuncion in his home in Brooklyn, New York.

Juan was born on June 16, 1943 in Caguas, Puerto Rico to Vicente Neri and Francisca Morales. He was one of eleven children. In 1954, they moved to New York City. In 1976, he met and married his wife, Maria, and raised their two daughters in Brooklyn. He graduated with a masters degree in social work from New York University in 1997. Juan dedicated himself to a career as a social worker with The Center for Children and Families until his retirement.

Juan had a tremendous thirst for knowledge and was constantly researching new topics of interest. He took up the study of music later in his life, which he continued to pursue and enjoy until his final days. His great joy was playing the guitar. He also loved photography and film, in particular classic cinema and science fiction. A true student of life, Juan often shared his learnings and practical wisdom with his loved ones. His family will fondly remember and miss his signature “lectures”.

The visitation is from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017 at the Daniel J. Schaefer Funeral Home in Brooklyn. The Funeral Mass will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Saint Michael’s Roman Catholic Church located at 352 42nd Street in Brooklyn.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make memorial contributions to St. Michael’s Church.
